Lestrade Mystery


From the Pilot (not aired)
The Hounds of Baskerville (no ring)

Christmas Scene (ring) 
Sherlock returns (no ring)

Can we have an explanation of Inspectors Lestrade mystery (possible wedding ring) through out the Sherlock series?  What is his background?  Does his have a family?  (I don't recall photos on his desk when we did see it) Is there issues in his marriage thanks to Sherlock needing a handler?
